SEC Basketball Power Poll Ballot: Week 7

SECPOWERPOLL2008 logo

And now … the moment you’ve been waiting for all day: the unveiling of this week’s SEC Basketball Power Poll (like the JFK assassination and the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, this will be one of those “where were you when?” moments). Below is our ballot and here’s a link to the official poll results. As you can see, not much difference. We would take some time to explain our reasoning, but frankly, considering the Hogs’ season, we don’t have much energy for hoops talk this afternoon.

1. LSU
2. (tie) Mississippi State, South Carolina
4. Florida
5. Kentucky
6. Tennessee
7. Auburn
8. (tie) Vanderbilt, Ole Miss
10. Alabama
11. Arkansas
12. Georgia

SEC Basketball Power Poll Ballot: Week 6

SECPOWERPOLL2008 logo

Below is our ballot for this week’s SEC Basketball Power Poll. (The overall results are available here.) To our mind, the LSU Tigers are a clear-cut No. 1, while Arkansas and Georgia are clear-cut Nos. 11 and 12, respectively. (Man, it hurts to type that.) For slots 2 through 6, you might as well pick the names South Carolina, Florida, Mississippi State, Kentucky and Tennessee out of a hat.

1. LSU
2. South Carolina
3. Florida
4. Mississippi State
5. Kentucky
6. Tennessee
7. Vanderbilt
8. Ole Miss
9. Auburn
10. Alabama
11. Arkansas
12. Georgia

SEC Basketball Power Poll: Week 3

This post is not for the faint of heart: it’s Power Poll time and the Hogs have continued to slide, now sitting at #11 on our ballot after being #8 last week and – gulp – #2 the week before. We’re still fairly optimistic about the rest of the season (call us crazy, but we think they still have a decent shot at making the NCAAs), but at this point it’s hard to argue that they deserve to be ranked ahead any of the teams who’ve actually won a game.

And on that cheery note, on to our ballot (be sure to check out the overall results over at the Ghost of Chucky…our fellow bloggers were a little kinder to the Hogs than we were):

1. Kentucky
2. Tennessee
3. Florida
4. LSU
5. South Carolina
6. Mississippi State
7. Vanderbilt
8. Alabama
9. Auburn
10. Ole Miss
11. Arkansas
12. Georgia

SEC Basketball Power Poll: Week 2

SECPOWERPOLL2008 logo

The latest SEC Basketball Power Poll has been released and is available for your viewing at the outstanding South Carolina blog Garnet and Black Attack. Below is our ballot, which we somehow managed to fight through our post-Ole Miss depression to compile.

As you will notice, our ballot closely resembles the final tally. Not surprisingly, the Hogs took quite a tumble. And not surprisingly, Jodie Meeks the Kentucky Wildcats shot to the top. With so many flawed teams in the conference, we get the feeling this is going to be a wild, wacky year for the inaugural SEC Basketball Power Poll.

So, what’s your take?

1. Kentucky
2. Florida
3. Tennessee
4. Mississippi State
5. LSU
6. South Carolina
7. Vanderbilt
8. Arkansas
9. Alabama
10. Ole Miss
11. Auburn
12. Georgia

SEC Basketball Power Poll: Week 1

With conference play rapidly approaching, the folks who brought you the SEC Football Power Poll have joined forces once again to bring you the basketball version. We’ll be the first to admit that we’re not yet experts in the nuances of the Hogs’ various SEC foes, so we’re keeping this simple for now. If you see anything we got egregiously wrong on our ballot below, let us know and we’ll try to incorporate your feedback next week.

Note: We submitted our ballot last night, before Tennessee lost to Gonzaga. We’re still not sure we would have ordered the teams differently, though. It will take a couple of weeks for the conference’s pecking order to take shape.

1. Tennessee
2. Arkansas
3. Florida
4. Kentucky
5. LSU
6. Vandy
7. South Carolina
8. Alabama
9. Auburn
10. Mississippi State
11. Ole Miss
12. Georgia

(One final note: the Hogs at #2! Amazing!!)

SEC Power Poll: Season-Ending Edition

Well, you know the season is really over when it’s time to type out the final edition of the SEC Power Poll. It’s been said many already, but this was a down year for The Greatest Conference in All the Land: there were way more disappointingly mediocre teams than surprisingly good ones. There’s some good commentary on that subject over with the official results.

It was great fun participating in the poll this year, and was a true honor to be on the same list with so many fine bloggers. Thanks to cocknfire at Team Speed Kills for bringing us into the fold.

And now, with a crushing air of finality, we present to you the last power poll of the 2008 football season (with our week 1 rankings in parentheses).

1. Florida (2)
2. Alabama (4)

These guys have been a cut above all season. Both teams fondly remember their visits to Fayetteville, we’re guessing.

3. Ole Miss (8)

Props to Houston Nutt, and we mean it. That game sucked, though…it’ll be nice to return the favor in Oxford next fall.

4. Georgia (1)
5. LSU (3)

These two teams sum up the SEC season better than anyone…great expectations, poor delivery.

6. South Carolina
(6)
7. Vanderbilt (10)
8. Kentucky (7)

Nothing to say about these teams, sorry.

9. Arkansas (11)

Not super fun season for the Hogs, but there are lots of reasons to be optimistic about the future. Browsing through a lot of the other Power Poll bloggers’ sites, we noticed a definite sense of concern about the Razorbacks. They know that next year we’ll be the team nobody wants to play, and the year after that we’ll be a legit threat.

10. Tennessee (9)
11. Auburn (5)
12. Mississippi State (11)

The coaches for these last three teams all got fired. Ouch.

SEC Power Poll: Week 12

Full confession: we slacked last week and forgot to put up our SEC Power Poll ballot. Never fear…several Razorback Expats interns have been fired over this transgression. Having scared some sense into the remaining team, here’s our pinpoint-accurate look at the conference rankings this week (and don’t forget to check out the full results over at Garnet & Black Attack):

1. Florida (defeated South Carolina, 56-6)
2. Alabama (defeated Mississippi St, 32-7)

Can we just go ahead and play the SEC championship game? This is getting boring. Interestingly, the Hogs actually gave the Gators one of their “closer” games since they started their current streak of scary blowouts.

3. Georgia (defeated Auburn, 17-13)
4. LSU (defeated Troy, 40-31)

LSU’s comeback from a 31-3 deficit in the 3rd quarter was one for the ages…too bad it was against Troy. Meanwhile, Georgia continues to muddle through.

5. Ole Miss (defeated Louisiana-Monroe, 59-0)
6. Vanderbilt (defeated Kentucky, 31-24)
7. South Carolina (lost to Florida, 6-56)

Props to Ole Miss for showing Alabama and Arkansas how an SEC team should handle Louisiana-Monroe, and to Vandy for finally getting off that “almost bowl eligible but not quite” hump. As for South Carolina, the less said, the better.

8. Kentucky (lost to Vanderbilt, 24-31)
9. Arkansas (idle)
10. Auburn (lost to Georgia, 13-17)
11. Mississippi St (lost to Alabama, 7-32)

Welcome to life in the dregs. Not much to say here.

12. Tennessee (lost to Wyoming, 7-13)

Oh boy. This is getting really ugly.
