Let’s Discuss Happier Times

I think we can all agree that it’s time for a break from the current unpleasantness of Razorback basketball, so with that in mind let’s discuss a more appealing subject: which ex-Hogs should have their numbers retired and jerseys hung from the rafters at Bud Walton? (This topic comes directly from Arkansas Sports 360, which has a good article asking why Arkansas doesn’t retire basketball numbers, so definitely check that out for your background research.)

As a starting point, here’s a very hastily put-together and poorly researched list of possible candidates…feel free to pick it apart and/or suggest your own version in the comments section.

In rough chronological order:

Sidney Moncrief
Ron Brewer
Marvin Delph
Darrell Walker
Alvin Robertson
Joe Kleine
Eddie Sutton
Todd Day
Lee Mayberry
Corliss Williamson
Scotty Thurman
Corey Beck
Nolan Richardson

This doesn’t include the larger-than-lifesize statue of Dwight Stewart that we’re recommending be placed outside the entrance of Bud Walton. That one is such a no-brainer it’s almost not worth mentioning here.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts…

What about Al Dillard and Pat Bradley? I’d vote for Matt Jones and Jonathon Modica too.

I’m in favor of all of these guys’ jerseys being retired (and the D. Stew statue too - I trusted him shooting threes more than our current guys shooting free-throws), but if I had to shorten the list I would say:

1) Sid
2) Ron Sr.
2) Todd (Todd always reminded me a lot of Ron Sr.)
3) Lee
4) Corliss
5) Scotty
6) Corey (my all-time favorite razorback b-ball player by the way - completely unheralded but the glue of the greatest razorback teams ever).

I have a feeling Nolan will get his (completely deserved) due next year.

Don’t forget about Kareem Reid. I don’t recall any of those other guys playing for the Globe Trotters.

I like Pat Bradley and Matt Jones as much as the next Hog fan but they absolutely should not have their numbers retired. Nor should Modica.

It should be an exclusive club…

I’d say

Ron Brewer
Todd Day
Sidney Moncrief
Corliss Williamson

to start.

And oh yeah, Todd Day (among other former Hogs) also played for the Globetrotters.

Criteria: Great players

Result: Sidney Moncrief and Corliss Williamson. Everyone else, while excellent players, are not in the great player category.

I agreee with your list 100%.
Nice to see 3 names from each of the periods of the 2 dynasties.
Would add Oliver Miller to May/Day.
