"But go on, remind me of this team, the glory, the heart wrenching loss to Larry Bird."

That was the 1979 team, not this one. The Final Four team lost to an outstanding Kentucky squad in the national semifinals, and won the consolation game (remember those?) against Notre Dame, on a last second shot by U.S. Reed (of course!).

But even though on March 17, 1979, Larry Bird tripped U.S. Reed but Reed got called for traveling, Arkansas lost the Midwest Regional Final to the Indiana State Sycamores, and Sidney Moncrief's collegiate career ended right there in Cincinnati, I'm not bitter. I've forgetten all about it.

Whit, you should finish up with where these guys have gone in life. Two, I know, are physicians, two went on to great pro careers. One became a mediocre football coach. In general, though, Sutton's first great team produced some fine men.

You have to wonder what would have happened if the 1977-78 team had had a healthy Chris Bennett and a discplined James Crockett. Bennett was a Parade high school All-American, but by 1977 it was painful to watch him play. He had one of the biggest braces on his knee that I have ever seen and moved gingerly about the court. Crockett was 6-8 and a phenomenal leaper, but he wouldn't get in shape and was constantly in Sutton's doghouse, eventually finishing up his career at Monticello.

A great team, and I, too, saw those guys play in high school. For some reason I didn't think much of Moncrief, but Brewer was awesome. As was Delph, the best pure shooter I ever saw, except for maybe Chris Bennett, whose knee was shot by the time he got to UA.

A fine time to remind me of past glory, Whit, after watching the nadir of the Heath House of Horror at Bama tonight. Please, please, bring in anyone but these guys.

But go on, remind me of this team, the glory, the heart wrenching loss to Larry Bird. It did indeed mark the beginning of Razorback basketball. What we have now isn't worth a bead of Jimmy Counce's sweat.
