O Henry

For a fun trip down memory lane, you should head over to Max Brantley’s Arkansas Blog to read a column that the late Orville Henry wrote just after Arkansas hired Houston Nutt. Spoiler alert: He wasn’t a huge fan of the move. Seems to me that Orville could have made his point in about half of his word count, but still, it’s a very interesting read.

As someone who used to edit Orville’s game day football stories, believe me that it was impossible for him to use half the word count.

I thought Orville had a “no-edit” deal? Led to some amusing wordplay, as I recall….

No, Frank, there was no “no edit” deal for Orville at the Gazette. You must be thinking of Wally Hall. He is the one whose copy doesn’t get edited, resulting in some very amusing wordplay. Orville’s copy was always edited, at least in the news section (and I assume in the sports section as well). You might not remember, but his football game day stories always ran on the front page of the newspaper, not the front page of the sports section. My understanding was that he became very unhappy with how his copy was edited in the Gazette sports section by the people Gannett brought in and that was one of the reasons he left for the Democrat.
