Let the Rumors Begin

buzzards

With the buzzards circling over Houston Nutt’s Razorback coaching career, Arkansas fans are ready to speculate about who the next Boss Hog of Football may be. Courtesy of Wholehogsports.com’s Slophouse blog, I stumbled across this column by Paul Finebaum of the Mobile Press-Register that says Tommy Tuberville may be that person (actually, the piece does much, much more to stoke the Tuberville-to-A&M rumor, but still …).

Tuberville in Fayetteville makes sense: He’s an Arkansas native and was a serious candidate for the job 10 years ago (plus, a gig in Fayetteville would bring him one step closer to his unstated goal of coaching every SEC West school). I would be more than OK with him on the Hill.

But, that’s assuming Tommy would be interested … and that could be a big if. I have to wonder how appealing the Hog job – with the “batshit crazy” fans and no natural recruiting base – will be when it almost surely opens later this year. Perhaps we should just hire this guy. Granted, he has no coaching experience, but he was pretty convincing in “We Are Marshall,” and he would probably be able to provide some good advice to Razorback players on their inevitable journey through the criminal justice system.

Just like ten years ago, why would he want to make less money at a lesser program?

Okay, you’ve got to stop reading my mind! I’ve been talking with my dad about the coaching situation for about a month (or the lack of it), and Tommy was the first person I wanted to try to get. Hmm, wonder if the new AD will approve a gianormous dollar deal like Saban got?

They better. Its not like northwest arkansas doesn’t have the money. And Tuberville would be the perfect coach for the razorbacks.

lol, guys. Please.

Who would want to coach here? And we are not going to pay “Saban” type money to anybody.

We are going to end up with a mid-major coach most people have never heard of. Hopefully we luck into one that is good.

I hate to say it, but I think Charlie is probably on the right track here. For reference please refer to the bball coaching search last spring.

Granted, but the football team has had more recent success than the basketball team. I think we need to throw the bank first at Tuberville, then if that fails at Levrett at USF, and then possibly Pat Hill (Frenso St., great offensive mind).

And if all else fails maybe the newly available Frank Broyles mights want to patrol the sidelines one final time…only kidding.

***Jim Leavitt is the USF coach not Levrett.

The Razorback football job next year is not better than the Razorback basketball job last year.

1. Our fan base surrounding the football program is seen as batshit crazy to most people. Read something over the summer that had head coach here as one of the worst jobs in the country.

2. The basketball team returned EVERYBODY.

3. The football team is going to lose McFadden, Monk, Hillis, Marcus Harrison, Michael Grant, Matt Hewitt, Matterral Richardson, Robert Felton, Nate Garner, Fred Bledsoe. If any of the juniors leave like Felix Jones, Jose Valdez, Luigs…well you get the idea. REEEEEEBUILDING.

4. Our basketball program has had *real* success in my very own lifetime.

Here’s my short list.

1. Jimmy Johnson – Pipe dream? Perhaps. He wants to coach again, though, and if we can keep it under wraps like we did the second half of the bball coach search, why not? No harm in asking, and he’s an alum who would bring ridiculous publicity.

2. Bo Pelini – Hopefully Carr stays put, as does Miles.

3. Brent (Brett? I’m lazy.) Venables – He’ll be a head coach in three years.

4. Butch Davis – May not leave, but again, gotta give him a call.

How about Barry Switzer, he knows how to win with no passing offence. It’s called the wishbone!

We should look at Frank Solich at Ohio. Aside from just being kind of funny given the whole Nebraska/Nutt thing, Solich has turned Ohio University’s program around. He took them to their first bowl game since 1968 last year.

His record at Nebraska was 58-19.
